Mattel Toy Recalls
Mattel, Inc. is the largest toy company in the world. This largest toy company in the world was founded by Harold Matson and Elliot Handler in 1945, as they started to produce picture frames. However it was Elliott Handler who had a visionary of a side business in dollhouse furniture out of the converted garage (Mattel). As a top company, the primary activities of Mattel are to design, manufacture, and market the toys. As the companyââ¬â¢s sales growing slowly, Mattel started to produce varieties of high quality products and became one of the of the best toy companies around the nation at the time.The major move by Mattel was when it sponsored Walt Disneyââ¬â¢s Mickey Mouse Club television show that put the company in spotlight and companyââ¬â¢s sales increased significantly. That sponsorship of Mickey Mouse Club helped the company to attract a very high proportion of young potential customers. In 1959, the wife of Elliot Handler, Ruth Handler came up with an outstanding ide a that changed Mattel forever. As Ruth Handler watched her daughter playing with paper dolls, she suggested the idea of making three dimensional dolls to her husband.Elliott loved the idea of making such dolls and introduced the doll with a full wardrobe and accessories to the market. The doll initially named after the nick name of daughter of Elliott and Ruth. The introduction of the new doll was a huge success for Mattel and immediately the doll became the major product line of Mattel (Finding). With the success of Barbie doll, Mattel was named a public company and ranked soon as one of the largest industrial companies in the United States. In 1968, Mattel have introduced another consumer-loved product called Hot Wheels. This was second biggest hit since the company introduced Barbie.Hot Wheels immediately labeled Mattel as the largest toy company in the world. As the toy industry was changing and new competitors were coming in, Mattel saw a stiff competition rising in the mid 198 0s. Like other companies in the toy industry, Mattel faced a stiff from the electronic entertainment. The electronic entertainment introduced many electronical videos games in which children switched to at an increasing young age from the traditional entertainment. To cope up with the competition and attract the new generation, Mattel decided to expand into technology by producing lectronic gaming products. Mattel failed to attract a high proportion of consumers, and were unable to fit in with the new strategy as there were new competitors producing electronic games with lower prices. Later, Mattel decided to focus on producing the core products of the company. This strategy to refocus on the core products and makeover some of the core products was a great success for Mattel. For example, after doing makeover, in 1988 to 1993, the sales of Barbie doll increased to $ 1 Billion dollars from $430 Million dollars (Sansweet).As Mattel is known for making most of its own products in their owned manufacturing facilities, the company owned and operated 10 manufacturing plants worldwide. Half of the manufacturing plants are located in China (Jiangyong). Since Mattel started its business, the company produced its products mostly in developing countries to take the advantage of cheap manufacturing costs. Unlike many toy companies, Mattel produced 70% to 80% of its products in their own manufacturing facilities. The company believed that making products in-house will be more stable and high efficient products.According to Mattel, in-house facilities have high standard safety measures and high quality control that produce high-quality products. Besides making most of its products in Mattelââ¬â¢s own manufacturing facilities, some of its production was outsourced to China and other developing countries in order to focus on domestic strategic efforts such as Research and Development and Marketing. However these outsourcing products were not efficient as products were made in in-house facilities. These outsourcing products were less stable and not as efficient.Many times these products needs to be recalled as they do not meet the safety standards and tend to hurt the image of a well-known organization like Mattel. Therefore, Mattelââ¬â¢s strategy was to focus on making most of its core products at their own manufacturing facilities, and outsource the products that are less popular and non-core. Due to outsourcing to other developing countries, the toy industry faced many hardships. The products that are made in developing countries that had substandard quality control were recalled many times due to the safety reasons.Mattel too faced a stiff pressure from the government and consumers for the products that were not safe and stable which are made in manufacturing facilities in China. Recently, Mattel recalled several of its products because they were not safe for consumers. Recalling millions of products, not only reduced the total revenues of the company, as well as it hurt the companyââ¬â¢s image at the same time. Mattel had been always trusted by its consumers for making providing its consumers high-quality products and stable products.The recalls that are connected with lead paint made by Mattelââ¬â¢s lont-time manufacturers. These manufacturers are responsible for not having strong safety regulations and not complying with the quality control within the organization. The manufacturer, Early Light Industrial, was responsible for the second major recall of about 1 million toys. The manufacturer had more than 200 employees to inspect if the contractors were complying with safety regulations, but none of them were stationed on-site to inspect the products. Failure to inspect the products left the company with rooms or errors.In order to understand a companyââ¬â¢s situation, financial statements are very important. In order to focus on that strategy, Mattel has decided to use the third party manufacturers to produce its non-core products.Slowly, Mattel has been moving its manufacturing to countries like China, Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, and many other developing countries. As Mattel has contracts with thousand of vendors in those co untries, the company does not need to rely on a single manufacturer. However, this strategy may not convey quality assurance of the products and also raise concerns over safety regulations. Due to substandard safety measures revolving toy designing and manufacturing in China, Mattel has been facing some tough challenges.During 2007, Mattel has made five recalls of over 21 million toys are made in China due to the excessive lead paints on toys and having loose magnets that normally impose danger to the children while playing with them. I did not know that the organization invites such drives aimed at collecting foodstuffs to assist in alleviating hunger. In effect, the Feeding America Eastern Wisconsin exercises a high level of social responsibility in issues central to humanity. Notably, the organization collaborates with other agencies to ensure that the hunger stricken communities live a pleasant life. This resulted to even worse quality of living conditions among the poor because the funds for maintenance and improvement of facilities were not enough. In relation to this, the low funding of schools have been affected by the building of prisons. It could be said that the priorities of the government have not been well-balanced. It is ironic that more money was spent on prisons when the more important institutions that could have helped the people stay away from the jails should have been given top priority. Instead, the exact opposite happened. Corwin says that, ââ¬Å"From 1984-1995, California built nineteen new prisons but the state has not built a new university campus in almost thirty yearsâ⬠(175). Considering this situation, had there been great efforts to construct schools or improve those which already existed, more children could have been molded in a better environment. In effect, there would be no need to construct more jails if there was a better plan for the people that encourage them and show that there is a hope for a better tomorrow for the poor. Moreover, there is the ââ¬Å"three strikesâ⬠law which demands more prisons to be built. The law is said to force more prisoners to stay in jai l for a minimum of twenty five years to life even for petty offenses. The long period of punishment for offenders increases the number of prisoners at a faster rate and thus requires the government to build more prisons. Other factors that affected the situation in the ghetto were the Watts riots which caused most white residents to flee the area. Then there was the fair housing legislation which allowed middle-class Blacks to move to better environments leaving the unemployed, single mothers, elderly and the welfare cases behind. Such groups of hopeless and helpless people were joined by Latinos who fled their country due to worse political situations. The competition for a low paying job among Blacks and Mexicans is high and is making their lives more difficult. With the struggles that they are going through, the people often result to violence to express their cry for their rights however such actions make the situation even worse. Following out Corwinââ¬â¢s logic, the conditi on of schools should first and foremost be made a top priority for the government because this can be an instrument in the making of better citizens. The improvement of such institutions should be well-funded so that quality service will be given to the people. Teachers should be paid well so that they will stay in the ghetto even after years of experience. Volunteer and substitute teachers may be accepted but they should not be the ones largely making up the faculty of the schools. The people, whether Whites, Blacks or Latinos, should be given equal

Transcultural Nursing Essay The country of Nigeria is located in Western Africa bordering the Gulf of Guinea (Bureau of African Affairs, 2011). The Cultural interview discussed in this paper was conducted on a 33 year old man who migrated to the United States of America from Nigeria 4 years ago. ââ¬Å"Nigeria has over 50 languages and over 250 dialects and ethnic groupsâ⬠(Central Intelligence Agency, 2011). The three largest groups are the Hausa-Fulani, the Igbo, and the Yoruba. Nigeria music is mostly folk-like. It is very popular worldwide due to the unique instruments played such as the gongon drums (Faola Heaton, 2008). The person I interviewed is a coworker of mine. Our interview took place in Taco Bell in Willoughby, Ohio, November 20th at 11 A. M. We spoke for about 1 hour and 40 minutes. During our interview I asked questions about the standards of living in Nigeria, and cultural beliefs and practices. I also asked individual questions about personal life and perceptions about Nigerian and American culture. According to my interviewee most of the houses in Western Africa are made out of brick. The only people who are able to have things such as air conditioning, televisions, and telephone service are rich people. Most jobs in Nigeria pay in salary rather than by the hour. During my research for this assignment I discovered that the average interest rate to buy a home in Nigeria is 17% -24% (Bureau of African Affairs, 2011). The taxes are also higher when compared to the United States. The unemployment rate is increasing rapidly which is also accompanied by an increased in crime rates. Approximately, there is a hijack taking place every two minutes (Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, 2011). The traditional Nigerian family consists of the father, his wife, and their children. The father is considered the head of the household and usually works to bring in the money while his wife takes care of the house and kids. The oldest male or father is the dominant figure in the household, and all the decisions that may affect the family go through him first. The oldest son in the family can take such a role in the absence of the father. From a very young age, children (especially males) are expected to contribute to family obligations, and help the family in any way necessary. Laziness is unacceptable and is considered a sign of weakness. The childrenââ¬â¢s responsibilities grow as they get older. It is not uncommon for older sons to drop out of school so they can work and help the family. Daughters usually help with things such as cooking, doing laundry, babysitting, etc. Elders are treated with a lot of respect and their advice and guidance is always taken into consideration when making any important decisions. The proper way to greet an elder person is by kneeling down which is considered a sign of respect and obedience (Anonymous Personal Communication, November 25, 2011). Because of the rising unemployment rates, women are now also expected to work outside of their homes and contribute to their familyââ¬â¢s income. There are certain parts of Nigeria that are extremely traditional and where women are treated like possessions with no rights and loss of identity. In many cases women are expected to work and earn an income, maintain the household duties, and fulfill the sexual desires of their men. Males are always admired while women are considered inferior. Females are usually raised to serve and be submissive and obedient to men (Anonymous Personal Communication, November 25, 2011). There are many marriages that end when the woman in the relationship gives birth to too many females (Faola Heaton, 2008). My interviewee states that this is less common in bigger more develop cities. Many families have an average of 10 or more children which is considered a sign of stability and good status; however, this is also becoming less common as having more children also leads to economic burden in todayââ¬â¢s society (Faola Heaton, 2008). Nigerians tend to be very family oriented people, and are usually very close to extended family and relatives. Most Nigerians live with their extended family in either the same house or in separate houses that are close together. Neighbors are often considered part of the extended family. It does not matter whether they are related or not (Anonymous Personal Communication, November 25, 2011). My interviewee shared with me several stories of how when he was a kid his neighbors were very involved in his childhood practically raising him. Holiday celebrations are a reason for big family gatherings and parties. There are many similarities when comparing holiday celebrations in Nigeria and the United States. Nigerians celebrate New Yearââ¬â¢s Day, Christmas day, and Easter just like people do in the United States. Their labor day is often referred to as ââ¬Å"workersââ¬â¢ dayâ⬠. They also have a ââ¬Å"freedom dayâ⬠where they celebrate their first real election of April 27th, 1994 (Faola Heaton, 2008). Election Day is also considered a public holiday. Nigeria has a ââ¬Å"dry seasonâ⬠and a ââ¬Å"rainy seasonâ⬠each year. Their Christmas is usually during the middle of summer. My research done for this assignment indicates that Rugby is the largest and most popular sport in Africa (Bureau of African Affairs, 2011); however, my interviewee states that Soccer is even more popular in Nigeria (Anonymous Personal Communication, November 25, 2011). There are usually big festivals that occur before and after each game for both sports. Hunting is also a very popular sport in Western Africa. My interviewee describes Nigeria as a very beautiful place full of nature, and where deer are a lot bigger than in the United States. It is very common to see lions, leopards, rhinos, elephants and buffalo crossing streets or simply strolling around the side of roads. My interviewee is from South East Nigeria. Besides English, he speaks Ibibio and Efic which are two ââ¬Å"vernacularâ⬠languages meaning they are native and indigenous in certain areas (Central Intelligence Agency, 2011). English is considered the official business language. My interviewee has a wife and two kids. He used to have his own business in Nigeria being a traveling agent and attended college to study marketing. His main goal is to become a Registered nurse (which he is currently attending school for) and to one day own his own business. Education is perceived to be very important in Western Africa culture even though many people never get the opportunity to attend college. Traditionally, most young adults continue living with their parents until they get married, even if they have to travel long distances for school (Anonymous Personal Communication, November 25, 2011). Most people living in Nigeria have diets based on organic foods that are low in preservatives, non-fried foods, and non-animal fat. Eating meat and going out to restaurants are options that are often avoided because very few people can afford them. Most food consumed comes from local farms and mainly consists of crops such as plantains, corn, yams, and sweet potatoes. Papaya, pineapples, coconuts, oranges, mangoes, and bananas are also readily available. My intervieweeââ¬â¢s favorite dishes are cassava which is a starchy root with a crisp white flesh and Nigerian Suya which are considered delicacies. Nigerian Suya is a method of roasting meat that tastes like barbecue. My interviewee dislikes American food because he says is very unhealthy and very hard to chew (Anonymous Personal Communication, November 25, 2011). West African culture is rich in health care practices that consist of a variety of home and folk remedies. Many people visit shamans, exorcists, card readers, advisors and sorcerers just to mention a few prior to seeking conventional medical help from doctors. Many ethnic groups in Nigeria are against Western medicinal practice including vaccinations or taking any type of pill (Central Intelligence Agency, 2011). Home remedies usually include special teas and foods recommended for specific illnesses. My interviewee states that when he or anyone else in his family is sick they try to rest as much as possible, take plenty of fluids, and visit a doctor. He also does yearly doctor checkups. One major risk behavior in Nigerian culture is the lack of protection when having sex and having multiple sex partners or sex with strangers (Unites States Agency of International Development, 2011). Not participating in Western medicinal practices can be considered a risk behavior. Even though people seem to be very well aware of the dangers of such behavior they continue to do same thing out of ignorance and a variety of personal beliefs. My interviewee shared with me how difficult it was for him and his family to adapt to a new culture. Some examples given were: learning how to drive on the right side of the road, learning how to handle U. S. currency, and understanding American slang. I have been living in the United States for 13 years and I still do not understand American slang. My interviewee also had to learn how to pump his own gas. In Nigeria gas stations pump the gas for you because they are afraid that you might try to drive away without paying (Anonymous Personal Communication, November 25, 2011). One of the hardest things my interviewee had to learn was to control his Sense of distance and attitude when approaching people for the first time. He states that in Nigeria everyone is very close and friendly with each other. Touch is considered an integral part of Nigerian culture but is misinterpreted in the United States (Anonymous Personal Communication, November 25, 2011). He states that when he first moved here he immediately noticed how people reacted to him ââ¬Å"strangely for acting too happy and friendlyâ⬠. Now he tries to be ââ¬Å"a bit more serious and reservedâ⬠when meeting someone for the first time (Anonymous Personal Communication, November 25, 2011). According to my interviewee most people in Nigeria are Christians. The few people that are not Christian usually worship different deities, spirits, ancestors, and Gods. There is a God for every element on earth and many other ones. The reason why Christianity is expanding rapidly is because of the many missionaries that come every year to help people in need and expand the message of God (Anonymous Personal Communication, November 25, 2011). My interviewee did not mention anything about Muslims or Islam. According to my research ââ¬Å"it is estimated that 50 percent of Nigerians are Muslims, 40 percent are Christian, and that remaining 10 percent practice various indigenous religionsâ⬠(McLaughlin, 2006). Differences between Muslims and Christians have created a lot of conflict in Nigeria. This is why most Nigerians try to marry within their own religion. The majority of Christians live in the southern part of Nigeria while the Muslims predominate in the North (McLaughlin, 2006). This assignment was challenging but very rewarding. I like to travel around the world and learn about different cultures. I will put the knowledge learned from this assignment into action and encourage others to do the same. I think that it is important to keep an open mind and respect and value any differences in culture. Expecting others to assimilate to ones culture is wrong and futile. Cultural diversity will always be a very important issue in nursing practice for many years to come. The United States of America is becoming a lot more than the so called melting pot and we nurses need to be prepared.

Pro-utilitarianism and ethical decision-making In its simplest form, utilitarianism presents the means of decision making as a process of elimination. When contemplating which choices are ultimately right or wrong, utilitarianism suggests that the most accurate decisions are those that offer the greatest net outcome, in contributing to the pleasure or happiness amongst a majority of people. Calculating the quantity of pain and pleasure in these decisions allows for the elimination of those that reveal the most negative ends, in order to arrive at a conclusion. In a situation where someone must weigh the consequences of killing one person to save a group of others, or save their own morals by allowing the group to get murdered by someone else, the blatant utilitarian answer tell us to kill the one person. This accounts for the greatest happiness principle, as it grants the maximum good to the maximum number of people. Arguments that could be posed against this would be that integrity and morality are alienated with this method of judgment, as ethics tells us that no one should ever kill anyone because it is morally wrong. Utilitarianism, however, counters these arguments though the simple calculation of weighing positives against negatives. Ultimately, when dealing with this dilemma, the person must choose the lesser of two evils. It is evident that both options are evil in themselves; it is simply a matter of evaluating which one provides a greater good for a greater number. Questionably, the individuals emotions are not taken into consideration and their integrity is relinquished when the lives that could be lost are weighed against, in terms of utilitarianism. Regardless of what the person decides to do, however, not everyone is given the opportunity to live. Utilitarianism advises us that since value is placed on outcomes rather than personal inclination, people want to save for the greater good because human nature suggests that we have the best interests of others at heart. Even if the verdict declares an action that is generally considered immoral through human nature, saving x number of people in contrast to the death of x number of people becomes morally valid from a different viewpoint. Ethically, one may argue that it is immoral to compare the significance of one persons life to somebody elses, as everyone has an equal right to live. Since the traveler must do this comparison, many questions arise from morality because they know for certain they will be left alive. It can be debated that morality is not preserved in utilitarianism, because of the frail distinction between the person committing the murder, and the act of allowing someone else to commit it because of them. From a utilitarian standing, refusing to kill the townsperson would be morally unjust, because it leads to the death of so many other people. This brings about the worst possible outcome. The traveler will either have to live knowing they committed a murder in order to save many, or refused to harm anyone, inadvertently killing many. Presumably, the notion of murder is immoral, but becomes justified because of the greater end result in this particular situation. The outcome of a choice determines i ts morality-where the ends validate the means-when taking into consideration the pleasures and pains of unknown strangers to draw conclusions. The way we think of life in general is mirrored through the idea of utilitarianism. Calculating the costs and benefits of the decisions we make is something we do without any second thoughts, where we gravitate towards those that benefit the most. On a larger scale, utilitarianism takes this to include the pleasure or happiness of the greatest amount of people, ultimately being the highest and noblest end a person can achieve in life. We cannot quantify human happiness in the way we assume Williams wants us to. In suggesting that we are only happy if we are satisfied morally for our own benefit, this seems to suggest a selfish lifestyle. In reality, if people make others happy, this sparks personal happiness. In order to make the right decisions, we must think about what will provide the greatest good for the greatest number, considering all persons involved. We must weigh pleasure and pain, coming to a calculation to determine the best outcome. Ultimately, utilitarianism pertains to a persons character and desires, and does not only consider the outcomes of particular decisions. Once it is distinguished that bad intentions may cause harm-whether it is to you or to others-even if the outcome are not bad acts, the utilitarian analysis widens into a further moral theory where it is able to relate far more directly with the idea of our moral intuitions. When analyzing the decision of whether to commit the murder or not, utilitarianism certainly provides an ethical answer to why killing the one person is the right thing to do. Not only does utilitarianism consider this valid by purely the outcome, but it also provides insight into how our morality plays a role in why we decide to do it as well. Although it can be argued that utilitarianism does not account the morality of the person making the decision-as they must always keep in mind the outcomes of not only themselves, but everyone else as well-morality surely plays a role in the situation provided. Contribution to overall utility is most significant when shaping the morality of choices. Of course, every individual is not obligated to serve the general population every day through this theory, but even if only one other person is profited, it is plausible that an even greater utility and benefit for humanity may arise jointly.

A Farewell To Arms Ernest Hemmingwayââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å" A Farewell To Armsâ⬠is classic display of literature. The way he develops his characters is ingenious. In the beginning of the story I did not like the way it was going. As I read deeper into the book, ââ¬Å"A Farewell To Armsâ⬠I discovered the complexity of the characters themselves. I discovered that Frederic Henry was a rather complex character as well. When you are finally given the full picture of Frederic Henry, you realize that he can be described in several different ways. First, Frederic Henry is a round and very dynamic character. You also realize that because Mr. Henryââ¬â¢s mannerisms are so easily recognizable, he is a stock character as well. The point of view in the story is written in first person. The first person point of view is that of Frederic Henry. The stories underlying theme is identity. Throughout the whole story Frederic Henry is revealing himself to the audience and discovering himself at the same time. A secondary theme in the story is that Catherine, Fredericââ¬â¢s love interest, is slightly crazy. Throughout the story, I was intrigued by the things that Frederic Henry revealed to the audience. While reading the story it was as if you were right there with Frederic, going through the same things he did, and knowing every intimate detail. The aspects that Frederic Henry display are the aspects of a well developed character and a true war hero. The first aspect I would like to touch on is that Frederic Henry is a well-rounded character. As the story progresses we learn more and more about the character Frederic Henry. Though it may seem like a small point, a good example of how we learn more about Frederic as the story progresses is the fact that he is nameless in the first four chapters. Throughout the first four chapters, Frederic Henry is referred to as ââ¬Å"lieutenantâ⬠by his peers and ââ¬Å"babyâ⬠by his girlfriend. Its not until chapter five that he is referred to as ââ¬Å"Mr. Henryâ⬠. Then we learn his full name, Frederic Henry, in chapter thirteen. Another example of Frederic Henry being a round character is that he is closely involved in just about every part of the story. Of course he would have to be involved in the majority of the story because itââ¬â¢s basically the confession of his life. The entire story we learn about Mr. Henry, and we watch him grow to become a good man. Even when F rederic is not... ...ounded and dynamic character. The fact that Frederic Henry was a stock character made him easy to recognize and therefore made the story easier to follow. Though the story was told through a first person point of view Ernest Hemmingway kept the story interesting by telling it through a plural first person. The underlying theme of the story was identity. Frederic spent the whole story explaining who he was to the audience. The way Frederic told the story, he made it easy for the audience member to identify with him, therefore making it easier for the audience member to put themselves in his place. In 1523 the Spanish conquistador Ponce de Leon made an extensive voyage to a new world in search of the legendary Fountain of Youth. He never found it. Although many years have passed since Ponce de Leon made his infamous trip, the idea of mythical youth is still very much alive in our culture. We desire to actually act and feel youthful. Physical exercise is the only action a person can take to not only feel young but to physiologically slow the aging process. This paper will present studies indicating the affect exercise has on the human body and how it is useful in keeping us at our optimum physical and mental health. For now, aging is inevitable. Physiologically, we age because individual cells are preprogrammed to overwork and then self-destruct. The process becomes apparent in a comparison of old and young skin cells. Although both types contain the same array of genes, in older cells the genes work overtime under the direction of a master gene. The master gene forces the others to produce abnormal amounts of protein, which slows down replication and other vital cellular activity. These factors eventually cause organ degeneration and aging. To prevent or delay aging a way must be found to control overactive genes, say Dr. Samuel Goldstein of the University of Arkansas and Anna McCormick, Ph.D. of the National Institute on Aging. The ultimate anti-aging discovery would be a drug that could suppress the master gene, stopping cells from beginning their destructive course. Until this discovery (and well after) our anti-aging bullet can be exercise. Exercise is the closest thing to an anti-aging pill there is, says Alex Leif, M.D., a professor at the Harvard Medical School of Gerontology. Environmental Crisis Exposed in The World Is Too Much With Us and God's Grandeur à In his poem, "The World Is Too Much With Us," William Wordsworth blames modern man of being too self-indulgent.à Likewise, Gerard Manley Hopkins shows how the way we treat nature shows our loss of spirituality in his poem, "God's Grandeur."à We are ruthless by lacking proper appreciation for, being separated from, and abusing nature. à Man lacks proper gratitude for nature.à People often are blind to nature's great beauty.à "It moves us not," says Wordsworth.à Many people never see a sunrise or a sunset because we are too concerned with the hustle and bustle of our tiny worlds to appreciate the opulence around us.à We don't recognize the creation that God has bestowed upon us.à In his poem, Hopkins shows how the Earth is God's creation:à "The world is charged with the grandeur of God." The company has locations found in La Jolla, Encinitas, the San Diego metropolitan area, and also Del Mar. Kudlerââ¬â¢sââ¬â¢ assortment consist of the luxury cheeses, pastry goods, wines, meats, garden-fresh goods, condiments and seafood. By declaring the most important details of the establishmentââ¬â¢s existence, the reader of this paper will become familiar with the reason for this style of organizational structure, lateral and vertical collaboration, the phases of the collaboration process, and the key stakeholders and the collaborative interactions among them in order to reach a victory. Primary reasons for the business existence Kathy Kudler had a vision and made it a reality. Her experience in marketing gave her a leg up in the industry and the ability to market her vision. In organization collaboration consist of employees working together to accomplish shared goals. We all should know of the saying ââ¬Å"Two heads is better than one,â⬠this statement is indeed true. As workers in the bakery progress into the Christmas season, we have seen some changes that need to be made. Collaboration with our staff has allowed us to open the door and make the necessary changes needed. Changes needing attention are as follows * Waste * Safety * Customer care As manager, staff and I have held meetings, brainstormed and visualized where as a team we would like to see the company and the department in the future. Changes need to be made as far as waste; we are wasting too much product. Safety, we have a great record we would like to maintain. Customer satisfaction is at an all-time high but we would like to see our customers referring us new business. Changing the way Kudler focuses on waste, safety, and customer care. Managing this change comes with some adjustment and re-alignment of a few processes. We want to continue operating at optimum levels or performance to bring our customers the highest quality of service along with our superior products in the bakery. Focusing on waste, we waste approximately 4 thousand dollars a quarter in day olds and charge offs. That equates to $1600.00 a month in lost revenue. Team members need to be properly trained in order accuracy. By doing so we have proposed a training lead to shadow each employee and engage them to ask questions and repeat orders back to customers. Also we propose to offer day olds at a discounted rate, and once items have reached near expiration dates we like to donate to the local food banks and churches for a quarterly write off. This proposal suggests we will bring down the number per quarter and see more profits, allowing us to provide higher wages to our team members. Safety is a major focus in our department; we are at a 0% for accidents and pride ourselves in taking all safety precautions. Management proposes to hold weekly training meetings relevant to the industry and department per OSHA guidelines. All staff members must attend mandatory meetings on a weekly basis. We will schedule these meetings so all members will not have to attend during their personal time. Customer satisfaction is at an all-time high as we mentioned earlier, however we would like to accelerate our service to a higher level. Beginning the New Year we planned to begin handing out CSSS; customer service satisfaction surveys. At the end of each week we will compile the data and suggestions to see where we are lacking in service. The four dimensions of change management are strategy and vision, resources, systems and organizational culture. First, the strategy and vision that I have for the implementation is to inform each team member of the bakery of the new processes, and the expectation. This process will be introduced in phases. The resources that will be needed for this change be clear knowledge and a handbook approved by OSHA and upper management. If employees need an adjustment period to learn new processes and procedures we will allow an open forum to ensure all staff membersââ¬â¢ success. I would use the Project Management approach in managing this change by supervising both the implementation of the CSSS, and its results. Close monitoring in conjunction with the safety and waste programs set forth. Prior to incorporating this change, I will advise my team in the bakery to inform me and show me daily reports on waste and customer satisfaction vs. complaints. I will then work directly with the staff to implement all necessary changes within the department. From initial planning, to installation to daily monitoring and follow up, I will keep both my managers, and my supervisors informed of the progress and results of the change. Necessary corrections will be implemented as we grow and change as a team. My expected return on investment is not only going to be looked at by cash savings, but also savings in overages in labor, time spent by employees in which their focus is not on Kudler Fine Foods related business, and employee morale. The cash savings will be productivity based. The more time that my bakery employees spend on customer related business, the more productive they will be. By incorporating the CSSS, safety and new waste projects; this will ensure that each and every member of the bakery will be focused and attentive to bakery and customer satisfaction. As the other members of the bakery see their effort and drive are being met by their fellow employees, this will increase their desire to keep pushing towards our department and personal goals. Once each employeeââ¬â¢s realizes that everyone is doing their part, it will add to their sense of team accomplishment. I am very confident that this change that I am suggesting will increase both monetary returns, but also increased individual and departmental morale. George Orwell's horrendous yet prophetic vision of the future in his novel, 1984 has come and gone. In this nightmarish novel, Oceania, where the story takes place, is the perfect depiction of ââ¬Å"Negative Utopiaâ⬠in which the government is in total control of their citizens. They control every aspect of their life. From the smallest things as the clothes their citizen wore on a daily basis to the person they were allowed to marry to their thoughts. Freedom of choice and thought was unquestionable and was not allowed and anything or anyone that went against this principle or resisted oppression was completely suppressed themselves. Now, in 2006 under our current government there are a lot of similarities between the haunting novel of the ââ¬Å"Negative Utopiaâ⬠which George Orwell portrays inâ⬠¦.. Charlie and the Choclate Factory Essay
Despite the fact these were produced 34 years apart, there are many striking similarities. Of course, there are also many differences, which a viewer would expect in films that were done so far apart. Although these films were done three decades apart, the formula of the fantasy genre has not changed much over the course of the decades. The most obvious similarity in the genre is the general audience who will view these movies. The general theory of the fantasy genre is to create an imaginary world, which viewers can get immersed in to give them a break from reality. In this regard, both films succeeded wonderfully. On the flip side, the major difference in the genre is the scope of the imaginary world that can be created. In Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, the filmmakers were limited by having to create their imaginary world in a real world space. In 1971, filmmakers didnââ¬â¢t have the ability to create an unlimited virtual world like modern day fantasy filmmakers have, so the grandeur of the world that can be created now is very different. While the formula of the fantasy genre hasnââ¬â¢t changed a great deal, the social context of the time periods these films were made in has. For example, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory puts a greater emphasis on the disparity between social classes, which was a major aspect of the 1970ââ¬â¢s. The movie also focuses on proper behavior, being appreciative of what you have, acceptable societal behavior, and morals. In comparison, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was created during a time period when society places more emphasis on entertainment value in movies, instead of using them as a tool to express and teach acceptable societal behaviors. The remake also doesnââ¬â¢t focus as heavily on the difference between social classes, as the social classes have been blurred in todayââ¬â¢s society, and arenââ¬â¢t as well defined as they were in the 1970ââ¬â¢s. Oftentimes, remakes deviate from what was done in the original movie. This is done for many reasons, but may actually hurt the remake. Managers within an organization that are seeking change need to bring the idea to their employees or management team to receive etiquette feedback. In this paper I will discuss Managers role and responsibility how manager successfully handle change.Managers know that any kind of changes whether it is new ideas, new technology or new programs can create concerns and in most cases resistance. Employees have many of their own reason for resisting changes within the organization. A good reason could be that many employees gain accustomed to the companies way of doing things and management come in with new approaches. These new approaches are expected to fall in line with the employees but this does cause the wall of resistance and this wall can become strong.Many employees look forward to changes benefiting them in ways so it is important that management empower people to agree and make changes in ways that would works for them as employee. Mangers will never face a situation where there are no problems with bringing in changes. When implanting these changes management need to understand why these changes are necessary, what need to be change and if there are any blocks to enable the changes, Most changes are not overnight so management needs to involve their selves in monitoring the changes making sure the changes works.Some are frighten by change and many can adapt to it these type of personalities are know as type A and type B personalities. Managers also need to be respectful to the employees while adjusting to the change and as well as the employees need to do the same with management. Employees need to also realize that ma nagement have a little more of a harder job and that is to make sure the changes is doing what it needs to do in benefiting the company and is the change benefiting their employees and keeping them happy or at least content.Every responds to change differently, so mangers and high staff needs to try to introduce these changes slowly so that it is not such a shock. Most employees would like to have a message about change from two people with authority, CEO or their immediate supervisor. Without those people of authority relaying the most descriptive message about the change this can develop into two reasons for employee resistance, lack of awareness about the change and they are comfortable with the way things are and fear of the unknown. During the change mangers need to understand their employees concerns during this time.There are key phases for managing employees during change: ââ¬Å"Awareness of the need to change, Desire to participate and support theà change, Knowledge of h ow to change (and what the change looks like), Ability to implement the change on a day-to-day basis, and Reinforcement to keep the change in place. â⬠Organization need to know that employees will proceed through the phase or change at different rate of speedâ⬠(Garrison Wynn,à 2005. There are also six personal or professional phases that many employees go through when change is brought about.Employees may not go through the phase change in order. The six phases are: ââ¬Å"1. Anticipation. The waiting stage. They really don't know what to expect so they wait, anticipating what the future holds. 2. Confrontation. People begin to confront reality. Realizing that change is really going to happen or is happening. 3. Realization. Post change ââ¬â Realizing that nothing is ever going to be as it once was. 4. Depression. Often a necessary step in the change process. This is the stage where a person mourns the past. 5. Acceptance of the change emotionally.Although they may still have reservations, they are not fighting the change at this stage. They may even see some of the benefits even if they are not completely convinced. 6. Enlightenment. In Phase 6, people completely accept the new change. In fact, many wonder how they ever managed the ââ¬Å"oldâ⬠way. Overall, they feel good about the change and accept it as the status quo from here forward. â⬠(Garrison Wynn,à 2005) With these different phases that is why it is hard to tell or determine how long changes will take to implement.If employees were not aware that any changes were required then reaction of employee may be, why change if change is not working or that the change was a waste of time. Mangers should be ready for the resistance to any change, prepare for it, and make special efforts to assess and deal with individual reactions to change. A manager or a person in leadership must develop a proper attitude toward the resistance of change that their employee may have. Looking at the thoughts that many may have and carefully listen to their concerns is something that managers must do to help with the resistance of the change.Engaging many with the change should be done after fully understanding the concerns of others. The best way to minimize resistance to change is to involve those who is responsible for the change and those who are affected by it. Consulting employees from the areas affected first hand and not leaving in the dark is another method of handling resistance. With involving those who are affected a test run of the new changes could help iron out the problem areas, get feedback on what is working well and find out how to improve the on the change to make it affective.In conclusion key to monitoring change effectively is to stay in touch with the people. Ask your employees questions and demonstrate concerns for their well being and committing to whatever is necessary to make the changes work. Most people feel comfortable with changes. The suppor t of the managers and allowing the people to adjust to the change is greatly needed; it is also another way to let the people know the concern you may have for their well being. Managers must keep in mind that support from one another and allowing enough time and flexibility for the changes to take place is good leadership.No change takes place over night but with the help of every one pulling together it could make the changes a positive and an effective situation. Having the knowledge and skills in these two theories would enhance ethics of virtue and morality when dealing with others. Each action by an individual is evaluated according to the term of the utility principle (Kay, 1997). This would facilitate actions that are ethical and moral that would result to promote the greatest good for others. The professional ethical dilemma I have experienced involved lying to the manager concerning a workmate that had gone to carry out his personal business. The manager questioned his whereabouts and I had to lie that he had gone for some medical checkup, and was not in a good state to go for leave permission from the manager.

The countriesââ¬â¢ narrow market base for their expor ts identifies another negative effect of globalized trade. While most of the countries specialize in perishable agricultural commodities, their markets are narrowed to few countries, a factor that identifies high risks of market volatility. Economic instability in case of breached link between two economies therefore leads to loss in the value of commodities that cannot be stored for a long time. Such loses may also occur due to temporary diplomatic challenges and communication barriers. Declining trend in productivity of the countriesââ¬â¢ exports has also worsened their trade deficits (Simpson, 2007). Developing countries have also failed to reap the full benefits of globalization especially with respect to capital transfer across territories. While...
